Learn from experienced black belts and dedicated instructors
Kent Grapple is led by a team of highly experienced, qualified instructors who are passionate about helping every student reach their potential.
Owner & Head Instructor
Jon is the founder and head instructor of Kent Grapple, holding a 1st Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Kent Grapple began at Swale BJJ before growing into the full-time academy it is today — and Jon has been at the heart of that journey every step of the way.
Jon's teaching philosophy centres on building a strong foundation in fundamentals while fostering a positive, competitive culture. He teaches both Gi and No Gi classes throughout the week and leads the academy's competition team.

Bruce is a BJJ Black Belt and key instructor at Kent Grapple. A founding member of Unity BJJ before joining Kent Grapple, Bruce brought with him a wealth of technical knowledge and competitive experience that has been integral to the academy's growth. He earned his Black Belt in the summer of 2025.
Bruce teaches Gi and No Gi sessions across the week alongside Jon. His calm, methodical coaching style benefits students at every level — from beginners finding their feet to competitors sharpening their game.

Dave is a 2nd Degree BJJ Black Belt with nearly 20 years of grappling experience — one of the most seasoned practitioners you'll find on any mat in Kent. That depth of knowledge is something you feel the moment you roll with him; every position, every transition, every detail carries the weight of genuine mastery built over two decades on the mat.
While Dave doesn't run a fixed weekly class schedule, he's a regular presence around the gym in the evenings and takes the Thursday 8pm session — an opportunity for members to learn directly from one of BJJ's most experienced practitioners. If you get the chance to pick his brain or get a round in with Dave, take it.

Kids Head Instructor
Nathan is Kent Grapple's dedicated Kids Head Instructor, holding a BJJ Brown Belt. One of the club's early members from the Swale BJJ days, Nathan has grown alongside Kent Grapple and now leads what has become one of the best kids programmes in the area.
Nathan also runs the Saturday Open Mat sessions, helping all members get the most out of their free rolling time. His patient, encouraging approach makes him a favourite with students of all ages.

Trevor is one of Kent Grapple's original members — he was there from the very first session at Swale BJJ, before the club had a home of its own. That founding spirit runs through everything he does on the mat. As a well-rounded competitor with experience across all ranges of BJJ, Trevor has built a complete, pressure-tested game that works at the highest level.
Now holding a Brown Belt, Trevor channels that competitive mindset directly into his coaching, running the Wednesday 6am session for those committed enough to chase improvement before the rest of the world is awake. His sessions are technical, demanding, and built on the same principles he's refined through years of competition.

Max holds a Brown Belt under Ross Nicholls and is one of those rare athletes who truly lives the BJJ lifestyle. When he's not coaching the Thursday No Gi session at Kent Grapple, you'll find him rolling at some of London's most competitive training venues — London Grapple and Los Banditos Club — constantly testing and refining his game against elite-level competition.
That commitment doesn't stop at class time. Max regularly opens the gym early so members can get in extra mat time before the day starts — a reflection of the dedication and generosity he brings to everything he does. His No Gi game is sharp, technical, and grounded in real competitive experience, making the Thursday evening session one of the most sought-after on the schedule.
